Theatre Embassy

Documentaries

In the period between 1999 and 2017, the Theatre Embassy projects turned into various forms of video recordings. Often these were previously intended for the regions and countries in which we worked or as a reference of the project for the funds. Because the projects often took place in remote places on earth, it was important to also have images for the Netherlands where our office was located and to enhance the visibility of the theatre organization.
The films often provide a picture of the collaborative process, the context in which the theatre project was realized and the theatre organization and theatre-makers we were working with at that time.
Many theatre-makers were not yet known and became visible through films and photo reports. As a result, cross-connections and new initiatives slowly emerged over the years.

In the area of the city, Quetzaltenango active amateur groups would love to receive training and education. However, because the capital is too far away, few options exist. It is not easy for partner organization Timach to find experienced directors with sufficient artistic quality in Quetzaltenango amateurs who want to train and guide them in creating a performance around Mayan poetry. Ultimately, a start was made under the leadership of Gigi Suarez. Gigi's activities included preparing and organizing twenty theatre performances in Guatemala based on the poems of Maya writer Humberto Ak'abal.

Tierra Espiritual was developed in 2007 by the Theatre Embassy Foundation and Asociación Yatiyaña. The project lasted four years and its main objective was to strengthen and revive existing rituals of an Aymara community. Through this entrance, we wanted to strengthen the community and stimulate economic development.
Tierra Espiritual of Spiritual World is a concept of works, in which contemporary theatre makers contribute to strengthening these indigenous artists, and to express their expression. The starting point is that there is no high or low culture, but an enormous diversity of cultural expression. These can influence or contrast more sharply with each other: They are complementary to each other. Tierra Espiritual's method was developed in a four-year project in Bolivia. There, the right balance was sought between exchange, structure and knowledge transfer. In that period, various publications were made and lectures were given, among others, for Unesco in the Netherlands.

Birth is about the distance between urban women and rural women with regard to having children by caesarean section or home delivery. Since the colonial past, the homebirth with Indian mysticism and thus also rejection has been determined. And the caesarean section is a great revenue model for hospitals. Ecuador has the highest number of Caesarean sections on the American continent. The Otavalo people claim their right to give birth naturally by entering circles in hospitals. We tell this story through personal testimonials and the use of puppetry, video and dance to defy the exoticization of exclusion of the ‘Indian' in everyday imaging.
