PROYECTO DESIERTO
Location: Tacna - Peru - Latin America
On October 30, 2008 in the city of Tacna in the South of Peru, the project ‘Desierto' started. It was a combined effort involving the local theatre group Deçiertopicante, various artists from Latin America and Africa, and artists from the Netherlands and England.
The aim of the project was to give the city Tacna a cultural impulse through international cooperation of theatre makers and artists, using open public space as the starting point. This led to various inspiring on site performances, of which the last one was on location in the Atacama Desert. Ironically, short after the start of the project, a state of emergency was declared in Tacna. The open public space was suddenly occupied space. However, the initial shock was quickly seen as a huge boost for the project. It became even more interesting to investigate how the occupied space could still be open through theatre.
