Ashtar is a leading theatre organization in Ramallah. Ashtar's purpose is to stimulate social and cultural development in the Palestinian area through theatre. In addition, the founders want to promote the creativity of Palestinian theatre. They produce quality work, both educationally and artistically. They give theatre lessons at various schools and have regular performances in their small theatre. Ashtar has proven to be an excellent artistic foundation for the development of artistic talent. Cultural development is particularly important in an area where the residents are isolated.
In 2005, the first contact was made with Ashtar, after which, the Dutch theatre director Annemieke Delis worked for a half a year with the group. The resulting performance received first prize for best actress at the International Theatre Festival in Cairo. In January 2007, Theatre Embassy brought the show to the Netherlands and could be seen in De Balie in Amsterdam and other places.
