AMAKHOSI

Name: Amakhosi
Location: Bulawayo - Zimbabwe - Africa
Specialisation: production and training

Amakhosi is the oldest community theatre group in Zimbabwe. It has operated for many years in the cultural field. Led by the experienced Cont Mhlanga, Amakhosi produces performances and workshops. In addition, Amakhosi has its own training program in acting and theatre making. Amakhosi has its own work area, an outdoor theatre and reasonable technical facilities. Within Zimbabwe and in Southern Africa it has a reputation for being inspiring, and operating as a professional organization in Theatre for Development.

In the early days of Theatre Embassy, there was already cooperation with Amakhosi. After many small workshops in 2006, the Dutch trainee Misha Wolters was sent to Zimbabwe. She contributed to a performance on individual and national independence in the context of the deteriorating situation in the country. Then one of the Zimbabwean actors studied for a few months at the HKU in Utrecht. Wanda Meeuws continued by cooperating with the project Living in a Box in 2007. Unfortunately, for her own safety, she had to leave Amakhosi early. The very poor political and economic situation in Zimbabwe at this time prevents cooperation with Amakhosi. Nevertheless, Theatre Embassy remains hopeful for a resumption of work.
