In November and December 2008 a collaborative project is taking place in the city of Tacna in Peru, South America. Tacna is situated in the middle of the desert just north of the border with Chile and some 1200 kilometers south of Lima. The desert will serve as a background and source of inspiration to this multi disciplinary collaboration between theatre makers, artists and the city of Tacna.

Desierto is s a collaboration between DeçiertoPicante from Tacna, Theatre Embassy from Amsterdam, artists from Latin America and artists from the international Cascoland network.

Purpose of the project is to give a cultural impuls to Tacna in a multi-disciplinary way and to stimulate international exchange between theatre makers and artists. This will lead to a common artwork at the edge of the desert that will function as a backdrop as well as an inspiration to the project.
The three main themes of 'Desierto' are based on the unique possibilities of the desert:

History: 5000 years ago people started to organize in new ways and built the first ever cities in the world in this desert.
Struggle: Against the elements, in a surrounding of extreme conditions, and struggle for the elements. In the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century Tacna was the centre of the resistance against the Chilean invasion of the desert.
Desert as energy source: In the light of the growing awareness worldwide about sustainable energy and efficient biological and technical recycle processes 'Desierto' will research solar-, wind- and other energysources of the desert in a playful and creative way.
